To mark July's Group B Strep Awareness Week, on Wednesday 9 July from 5:00pm - 6:30pm Group B Strep Support will be holding a drop-in event at the House of Commons to meet with MPs and raise awareness of group B Strep.

Group B Strep is the most common cause of serious infection in newborn babies in the UK, and one of the leading causes of neonatal sepsis and meningitis. On average, two babies each day in the UK develop a group B Strep infection and each week, one baby dies from a group B Strep infection and another is left with a life changing disability.

Please write to your MP now and ask them to join us at this event, hear more about group B Strep prevention in the UK, and show their support for better awareness and prevention.

I am writing as a supporter of national charity Group B Strep Support and one of your constituents. I would like to ask you to attend a special event they are organising in Westminster to find out more about their campaigns and the challenges pregnant women and people face with group B Strep in the UK. Alison Bennett MP and Helen Hayes MP are co-hosting the parliamentary drop-in event on Wednesday 9 July from 5:00pm – 6:30pm in Room P, Portcullis House.

You may already know that group B Strep (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies in the UK, causing sepsis, meningitis and pneumonia. About 800 babies a year develop GBS infection in the UK. Approximately 70 die, and 50 recover with life-changing disabilities. 
 
This event is an opportunity to learn more about group B Strep and show your support for this important issue. There will be a photo opportunity with key members of the Group B Strep Support team, as well as briefing materials available.
